Guidelines to visiting Petra

Carved out of sandstone more than 2000 years ago, Petra is an extremely fragile site. Its delicate facades are highly susceptible to erosion and weathering as well as damage inflicted by visitors to the site. While responsible authorities are doing all they can to conserve Petra and preserve it for future generations, visitors can also play a big role in helping to minimize damage to the site.

You can help maintain this national and global treasure by abiding by the following:

  • Please do not purchase any antiquities, be they rocks or coins. There is no way of knowing whether they are real. Destroying the natural archaeology of the site will damage Petra for future tourists.
  • Please do not walk on the monuments. Not only do we want to ensure our site stays pristine for many years to come, we also want to make sure you stay safe.
  • Be sure to dispose of any rubbish in the bins located inside the site. Please do not litter.
  • Use only licensed forms of transport inside Petra (check at the Visitor Center to make sure what can be used).

Please also take into consideration the following:

  • We encourage you to learn about  the local communities. We ask you to be sensitive and respectful to their customs, culture, and religion.
  • Do not venture off the main trail alone. In order to ensure your safety, please explore only designated trails and arrange for a guide to take you along any of the other trails. You must have a guide for the guided trails.
  • In case of an emergency, find the nearest tourist police member or park ranger and ask for assistance. You can also call (+962) 3 2156441 to reach the tourist police office. The tourist police office is inside the Visitor Center.
  • Please purchase your ticket from the Visitors Center only. Keep your ticket stub with you at all times. Refrain from selling your ticket to other tourists.
  • Make sure to bring a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water. Avoid strenuous walks or hikes at mid-day.
  • For your safety, all tourists are requested to exit the Park before sunset.
  • Sleeping inside the Park is prohibited.

Thank you for doing your part to protect Petra!
